Exhibit Description

Exhibit halls are located adjacent to the lecture hall, independent of actual continuing education activities.  Break times are scheduled to allow physicians ample time to view exhibits throughout the course.

CME Mission and Standards of Commercial Support

Statement of Mission

San Diego Shoulder Institute (SDSI), a provider accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) is dedicated to the advancement of education in the area of orthopaedic shoulder care specifically related to shoulder arthroscopy, arthroplasty, and fractures.  Our target audience consists of United States and International orthopaedic surgeons with an interest in shoulder care.  Our secondary audience consists of other surgeons and physicians, orthopaedic fellows and residents, and allied health clinicians (particularly physical therapists) with an interest in shoulder care.

It is SDSI’s intention to adhere to ethical, professional, and legal standards critical to the relationship between the medical device industry and healthcare professionals.  Interaction between SDSI and the industry is based on the advancement of education and scientific method and does not promote a specific business entity or commercial interest. SDSI adheres to all standards of the ACCME, Advamed, the American Medical Association (AMA), and other regulatory bodies. SDSI enforces ethical business practices and socially responsible industry conduct in all business interactions.

Summary of Activities

SDSI offers an annual course and subsequent DVD of course lectures.  Course content focuses on Arthroscopy, Arthroplasty, and Fractures of the shoulder.   Each year, SDSI brings together orthopaedic experts from across the globe to present current research and latest technological advances to improve physician knowledge, competence, and performance.
Advancement of Education:  Providing cutting edge information related to shoulder assessment, treatment, and improving patient outcomes are on the forefront of our mission. SDSI brings together experts in the field to present latest updates related to shoulder care.  Learning approaches are varied to enhance knowledge transfer and include lecture, panel discussions, case studies, a comprehensive course syllabus, workshops, model laboratories, cadaver laboratories, and an adjunct course DVD. Each year, SDSI assesses current level of practice and known best practice and quality of care issues to build our course content.
Product Specialists: Our educational endeavors involve expertise in the most up-to-date equipment for arthroscopy, arthroplasty, trauma, imaging, and rehabilitation. The knowledge, instruction, and support of an experienced surgeon relating to industry products and equipment are essential in providing current information to the audience.  SDSI supports hands-on training in laboratory and workshop settings.
Professional Training: SDSI individualizes training based on learner’s identified skill level and educational goals.  Orthopaedic residents and fellows are allowed to attend the course at a reduced fee in an effort to expand his/ her learning opportunity.  SDSI believes this exposure will benefit the communities in which these individuals settle into their professions. 

Expected Program Results

SDSI implements evaluation tools to assess the effectiveness of CME activities.  SDSI expects validation of:

• improved knowledge, competence, and performance related to care of the shoulder.
• course effectiveness in achievement of course objectives.
• development of CME activities in support of learner’s identified needs.
• course effectiveness as a quality program.

SDSI continues to ensure maximization of overall program effectiveness via implementation of an annual assessment and program improvement plan.

Educational Standards

SDSI prevails in the education and training of specialists in orthopaedic surgery, diagnostic and care protocols, and rehabilitation.  All educational events are in compliance with ACCME and AMA standards.

• Programs and events are conducted in a clinical, educational, conference setting that may include a hotel or other commercially available meeting facility conducive to the effective transmission of knowledge.
• Programs requiring hands-on training in medical procedures are held in training facilities, medical institutions, laboratories, or other appropriate facilities to allow enhanced training in compliance with regulatory standards.  Staff assigned to these programs have the proper qualifications and expertise to conduct such training.
• Pursuit of the advancement of education is on the forefront of course scheduling. SDSI provides modest hospitality, meals, and receptions. These events do not take precedence over educational activities, nor are they scheduled to conflict with educational offerings.

Educational Grants

All educational grants are managed in complete compliance with ACCME’s standards of commercial support and the AMA’s ethical standards. Educational grants are used to fund direct activities associated with course offerings.  Funds from educational grants are used for direct course and laboratory expenses, modest meals, hospitality, and bona fide faculty expenses. 

• Course and laboratory expenses: SDSI places its primary goal on use of funds to provide educational opportunities of the highest quality. 
• Modest meals and hospitality: Any meals, receptions, or hospitality are modest in value and subordinate in time and focus in relation to educational events. 
• Faculty Expenses: faculty expenses include reasonable travel, lodging, and meals for bona fide conference faculty members.  SDSI pays all faculty directly in compliance with SDSI policy.

Disposition and Disbursement of Grants

SDSI makes all decisions regarding the disposition and disbursement of commercial support.  SDSI must be given full knowledge of all use of commercial support.  

Requirements for Educational Grants

The terms, conditions, and purposes of the commercial support must be documented in a written agreement between the commercial supporter that includes the provider and its educational partner(s).  The agreement must include the provider, even if the support is given directly to the provider’s educational partner or joint sponsor.  Both the commercial supporter and the provider must sign the written agreement between the commercial supporter and the provider.

Standards of Commercial Support

1. All CME activities are for scientific and educational purposes only and will not promote any specific proprietary business interest of a commercial interest.
2. SDSI makes all decisions independently and without influence from a commercial interest regarding:
1. Identification of CME needs, determination of educational objectives, selection and presentation of educational content, selection of all persons and organizations that will be in a position to control the content of the CME, selection of educational methods, and evaluation of the activity.
2. the disposition and disbursement of commercial support.
3. SDSI will not be required by a commercial interest to accept advice or services concerning teachers, authors, or participants or other education matters, including content, from a commercial interest as conditions of contributing funds or services.
4. Arrangements for commercial exhibits or advertisements cannot influence planning, nor can they be a condition of the provision of commercial support.
5. All commercial support associated with a CME activity must be given with the full knowledge and approval of SDSI.
6. The terms, conditions, and purposes of the commercial support must be documented in a written agreement between the commercial supporter and SDSI.
7. SDSI will pay directly any faculty expenses or reimbursement associated with this course according to SDSI policy.
8. The intent of all educational events, including the skills laboratories and workshops, is strictly educational.  No sales promotion may occur during this time.
9. Product-promotion material or product-specific advertisement of any type is prohibited in or during CME activities.
10. Social events or meals will not take precedence over educational events.
11. The source of all commercial support will be disclosed to learners prior to the beginning of the course.
12. All gifts accepted individually by physicians should primarily entail a benefit to patients and/ or the physician’s work and should not be of substantial value. 

Educational Standards of Practice

1. Content Validation: SDSI expects all of its CME programs to adhere to the ACCME’s content validation value statements.  Specifically, all the recommendations involving clinical medicine in a CME activity must be based on evidence that is accepted within the profession of medicine as adequate justification for their indications and contraindications in the care of patients.  All scientific research referred to, reported, or used in CME in support or justification of a patient care recommendation must conform to the generally accepted standards of experimental design, data collection, and analysis.  
2. Course Objectives: By analysis of current professional practice gaps, literature, research,  and survey results, SDSI incorporates educational needs that underlie learner’s professional practice gaps into educational offerings.  Activities are generated around learner’s current or potential scope of professional practice.  Course objectives align with educational needs, course content, educational goals, and desired results.  Objectives are communicated to the learner prior to the course.
3. Safeguards Against Commercial Bias: SDSI requires all persons in a position to control the content of an educational activity to disclose all relevant financial relationships prior to the course.  All potential conflicts are resolved prior to the course and all relationships are disclosed to learners prior to the event.  SDSI expects that the content or format of CME activities and related materials promote improvements or quality in healthcare and not a specific proprietary business interest of a commercial interest.  CME activities must give a balanced view of therapeutic options.  Use of generic names contribute to this impartiality.  If trade names are used, several trade names must be offered.  Educational materials such as slides, abstracts, and handouts cannot contain any advertising, trade names, or product-group messages.
4. Reimbursement: Due to the large number of faculty, SDSI does not pay honoraria.  All travel, meals, and reasonable conference-related expenses are reimbursed according to SDSI policy.  SDSI reimburses faculty directly.  No payment should be accepted from a commercial interest in association with CME events.  No other individuals, other than faculty and SDSI staff, are eligible for reimbursement.  Spouses and partners may share the hotel room and may be included in modest meals.

Measurement of Effectiveness

SDSI seeks feedback from learners regarding the effectiveness of the course via a comprehensive course evaluation.  To assist with course planning, a needs assessment tool is used.  Additional tools are used to assess course impact on physician knowledge and practice.
